Style Suggestion: Less is More

A few weeks ago we did a post on the art of looking effortless. Continuing with that in mind, here's our next tip: when it comes to accessorising, less is more.

Accessorising can make an outfit. But it can also break it. Too much and it looks try hard. And it suggests a lack of confidence in the strength of your clothing choices without it. Keeping it paired back shows self-assurance: you know you and your outfit look great, so you didn't need to overcompensate with accessories. One frequent mistake is wearing several pieces of jewellery AND a stand out belt. It's too much. They end up competing against each other.

When in doubt, I suggest just sticking to a bracelet/cuff and pair of earrings. A bare neck can look minimalist and sexy, whilst a pair of earrings and bracelet are eye-catching without being overbearing. And, in terms of design, only wear one heavier standout piece.

This is also why I strongly advocate investing in fewer special well-cut items of clothing that deserve attention in themselves, rather than lots of generic ones that desperately need jazzing up. Keep the number of basic staple items you buy to a minimum.

So, next time you put an outfit together, keep in mind Coco Chanel's wise words: 'Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory". A beautiful bag, a gorgeous pair of shoes and the odd piece of jewellery is all you need.
