Fashion Should Be Fun

Let’s be honest, in the world of endless high-profile catwalk shows, Anna Wintour and copyright design lawsuits, Fashion can be seen to take itself a little too seriously at times. There’s no denying the talent, skill and effort that it takes to make it big in Fashion, but wearing beautiful clothing should be a pleasure. And if that can mean having a bit of a laugh whilst doing so, even better.

I’m not suggesting you should go out looking outrageously daft (although, by all means do if you feel like it!), but if a piece of clothing or an accessory makes you smile or chuckle to yourself, go for it. I met a stylish lady last week who said she bought a loud colourful skirt because it did just that – she didn't even care if it made her look good, it cheered her up so made her feel good. And the joy she felt in wearing could be seen all across her face. As Betsey Johnson once said:

“Always have fun with fashion. Dress to entertain yourself.”

You don’t need to go all out – just a whimsical print, or a playful bag is enough. If you’re not convinced, as always start small and go for something that’s not too outside your comfort zone. For example, if you’re a big fan of scarves, start there. For me – I love unusual hats. Hats in themselves automatically standout and change the mood of an outfit, so why not go for one that’s a bit more outlandish?

So, in the spirit of it being Easter, here are a few of my ‘fun fashion’ moments, ‘Easter Bonnet Style’:

 Whimsical hats

Yes that is a giant palm leaf on my head!

They may not be to everyone’s taste, but that’s not the point – they were fun, different and I had a great time wearing them. And I could see lots of people really loved them too.

So be bold, be brave, and if you see something that brings a smile to your face give it a go. It doesn’t matter if others don't react the same way – they’re just not in on the joke.
