“The shoulders are the last to go”

One of our Ageism Is Never In Style followers kindly brought to our attention a recent article published in The Wall Street Journal. The article titled ‘The Grown Woman’s Guide to Ageless Style’ seeks to give style tips from 2 women, one in her 40’s and one in her 60’s post-pandemic.

Whilst we always encourage more visibility and championing women and style over 40, unfortunately it’s another example of a seemingly pro-age article in the media that actually fuels ageist narratives and terminology.

One of the most shocking statements is:

“Another winning piece for older women: an off-the-shoulder top. This surprised me too, but evidently “the shoulders are the last to go,” according to Ms. Bruhn, who advises pairing such a top with gorgeous earrings for effortless elegance.”

It’s a shame to see women supporting attitudes that not only promote ageism but are deeply misogynist and it raises  the question do we ever talk about ‘what’s last to go’ for men?

Wall Street Journal’s mission states ‘As Journalists, we are humble, curious, empathetic, informed and open-minded’ but we don’t feel that this article reflects this at all.
